Florence Summer School Imagining Planetary Legal Orders

Confluence members participating in Florence Summer School:

Imagining Planetary Legal Orders

15 – 26 June 2026

From15-26 June 2026 several members of the Confluence of European Water Bodies working on the legal, cultural and political representation of waterecosystems in Europe have been invited to participate in the Summer School Imagining Planetary Legal Orders. The Summer School is organized and hosted by Arnulf Becker Lorca, Professor of Public International Law European University Institute.

International law began as a system regulating relations between peoples. How can international law as a human- and state-centered legal order rethink its anthropocentric foundations? This Summer School takes the contemporary ecological predicament seriously and asks: can international law be enlisted to imagine planetary orders, that is, orders not just between humans, but also between humans and non-human subjects?

Participants from the Confluence network are: Mediterranean (Zoe Lujic), Snæfellsjökuls glacier (Angela Rawlings), Venice Lagoon (Pietro Consolandi), Spree Berlin (Jakob Kukula) and Mar Menor (online)
