Robert Macfarlane
As we work hard on the new Confluence of European Water Bodies in Berlin in September 2026, we are look back at the launch of the Dutch edition of the Confluence at De Balie in Amsterdam by the wonderful Robert Macfarlane, author of Is a River Alive?
So much has happened over the past year in the bottom-up movement across Europe! A small selection:
๐น In Poland, 92,998 signatures led to a first step towards the recognition of the Odra River, and after seven years of campaigning, the permit for a hydropower plant on the Vistula was annulled.
๐น In Italy, more than 15,000 signatures were collected for UNESCO recognition of the Tagliamento River, and the Declaration of the Rights of the Venice Lagoon was used in a case against the Mayor of Venice.
๐น In Switzerland, 5,000 signatures were submitted as a first step towards the recognition of the Reuss River.
๐น In the United Kingdom, Lewes District Council supports the Rights of River Charter for the River Ouse.
Important steps contributing to that hopeful wave towards an ecological democracy in Europe! ๐๐๐
